Today’s ‘Wordle’ Hints And Clues For Monday, January 22nd (Wordle #947)

News RoomNews RoomJanuary 22, 2024No Comments3 Mins Read

It’s Monday and the start of the last full week of January. We’ve blown through the first two thirds of the month already. I suppose that means we’re that much closer to spring—not that winter has been too terrible so far.

I thought we’d check out a few of the big, important events that have taken place on the 22nd of January today just for fun before we hit the Wordle:

  1. Treaty of Karlowitz (1699): This treaty ended the Turkish War and marked the end of Ottoman control in much of Central Europe, significantly altering the balance of power in the region.
  2. Creation of the Principality of Liechtenstein (1719): On this day, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI decreed the union of the counties of Vaduz and Schellenberg, thus creating the Principality of Liechtenstein.
  3. Roe v. Wade (1973): The United States Supreme Court issued its landmark decision in Roe v. Wade, legalizing abortion in the U.S. This decision had a profound impact on U.S. law and society.
  4. Heathrow Airport Robbery (1983): A significant gold bullion robbery took place at Heathrow Airport in London, where gold worth £26 million (at the time) was stolen.
  5. Air Inter Flight 148 Crash (1992): An Airbus A320 operated by Air Inter crashed near Strasbourg, France, resulting in 87 fatalities. This accident led to various safety improvements in aviation.
  6. Kosovo War (1999): On this day, the Racak massacre occurred during the Kosovo War, where 45 Kosovo Albanians were killed by Serbian forces. This event significantly escalated the conflict, leading to increased international involvement.

Wordle Bot Analysis

After each Wordle I solve I head over to the Wordle Bot homepage to see how my guessing game was.

Not a great guessing game today but not terrible, either. I started with chair probably because I’m sitting in one. It wasn’t a great guess today, leaving me with just one lonely yellow box and 362 remaining options to choose from.

Salty helped slash that number down to the lucky number 13, and agent snuck in and assassinated a dozen of those, leaving me with just one. After some tweaking I came up with the answer!

Today’s Score (Competitive Wordle)

I lost to the Wordle Bot and its near-invincible starting word, trace, once again today. 0 points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Bot. Lame!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “tweak” originated in the early 17th century as a verb meaning “to pinch and pull with a sudden jerk and twist.” Its etymology can be traced back to the Middle English word “twikken,” which came from the Old English “twiccian.” This Old English term is believed to be related to the High German word “zwicken,” which also means “to pinch” or “to tweak.”

Over time, the usage of “tweak” expanded beyond the physical action of pinching and pulling. It came to refer more broadly to making small adjustments or modifications, often in a precise or fine-tuned way. This broader sense of the word is commonly used today, especially in contexts like adjusting settings or modifying software or machinery.
