Today’s Wordle #905 Hints, Clues And Answer For Monday, December 11th

News RoomNews RoomDecember 11, 2023No Comments5 Mins Read

Welcome back to the work week, dearest Wordlers. We’ve left the weekend in the dust, and Monday is upon us. Since I forgot to include a list of significant historical events in my post yesterday, I figured I’d do that now.

From declarations of war, to the abdication of kings, here’s what went down over the years on December 11th:

  1. 1282 – Llywelyn the Last, the last native Prince of Wales, was killed at Cilmeri, central Wales. His death marked the end of Wales’s independence and its eventual integration into England.
  2. 1789 – The University of North Carolina was chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly, becoming the first state university in the United States.
  3. 1816 – Indiana was admitted as the 19th U.S. state.
  4. 1931 – The British Parliament passed the Statute of Westminster, which gave complete legislative independence to the self-governing dominions of the British Empire, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, and Newfoundland.
  5. 1936 – After abdicating the throne the previous day, King Edward VIII’s abdication became effective, and he was succeeded by his brother, George VI. Edward’s abdication was the first voluntary abdication in British history.
  6. 1941 – Germany and Italy declared war on the United States, following the U.S. declaration of war against Japan in the wake of the Pearl Harbor attack. This marked the official entry of the United States into World War II in both the European and Pacific theaters.
  7. 1964 – Che Guevara addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.
  8. 1997 – The Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty extending the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, was adopted in Kyoto, Japan. The protocol committed its parties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, based on the premise that global warming exists and human-made CO2 emissions have caused it.
  9. 2008 – Bernard Madoff was arrested and charged with securities fraud in what was considered one of the largest Ponzi schemes in history.
  10. 2012 – North Korea successfully launched its first satellite, Kwangmyongsong-3 Unit 2, marking a significant step in its space program and raising international concerns regarding its missile technology.

Wordle Bot Analysis

After each Wordle I solve I head over to the Wordle Bot homepage to see how my guessing game was.

Can you solve today’s phrase?

Not bad today. Not bad. Not great, either. Niche ended up being a very good opening guess, leaving me with just 30 words and two boxes—one in green, the other in yellow—but my second guess, shame, left me with a coin toss.

After some thinking, I could only come up with two passible solutions: horse and house. There was really no way of knowing at this point, and I found myself wishing I’d come up with something that used a ‘U’ for my second guess instead of keeping the ‘E’ where I already knew it was green.

I guessed horse but unfortunately that was the wrong side of the coin. House was the only remaining answer I could think of, and sure enough—on my fourth guess—I brought home the win.

Today’s Competitive Wordle Score

Alas, Wordle Bot got this one in three today, so that’s 0 points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Bot. -1 total. Bleh.

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word ‘house’ comes from the Old English word ‘hūs’, which meant a dwelling or shelter. This Old English term is itself derived from Proto-Germanic ‘*husan’, which is believed to have had a similar meaning. The Proto-Germanic root likely comes from the Proto-Indo-European root ‘*kweys-‘, which means ‘to hide, conceal’, reflecting the original purpose of a house as a place of shelter or refuge.

Over time, the word ‘house’ has evolved in English to encompass a variety of meanings, not only referring to the physical structure of a dwelling, but also to a household or family living in a dwelling, and in broader contexts, it can refer to buildings used for specific purposes (like a ‘courthouse’ or ‘warehouse’) or even to legislative bodies (like the ‘House of Representatives’ in the United States).
