Today’s Wordle #901 Hints, Clues And Answer For Thursday, December 7th

News RoomNews RoomDecember 7, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

It’s Thor’s Day once again. It’s also my sister’s birthday. I don’t think she players Wordle, but I’ll say it anyways: Happy birthday, dearest sister of mine!

Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday, so I gave you all a brain teaser to solve on top of the day’s Wordle. Here’s the puzzler:

What is special about these words: job, polish, herb?

The answer is simple: Once capitalized, each word is pronounced differently (unless it’s at the beginning of a sentence, obviously). Each becomes a proper noun, which changes the pronunciation.

Let’s Wordle!

How To Solve Today’s Word

The Hint: The beat poem from the Mike Myers film ‘So I Married An Axe Murderer’

The Clue: This word has more consonants than vowels.

Wordle Bot Analysis

After each Wordle I solve I head over to the Wordle Bot homepage to see how my guessing game was.

Gah! Another loss to the Wordle Bot, who guessed sleek on his second guess somehow! I started out with noise, which I think is a more than halfway decent opening guess, what with all the vowels, but I still had 89 possible solutions left.

Can you solve today’s phrase?

Seals took that down to 6, which is still an unfortunate amount. In retrospect, I shouldn’t have used the ‘S’ in that last box since plural words aren’t possible solutions. Oops. This was my first of two mistakes today.

My second was going right to sleek instead of thinking about it more. This was the first word that popped into my brain and I just typed it in without wondering to myself if any other words were even an option. Obviously there was one more that I probably would have picked instead if I’d been thinking: sleep, which I finally got in the end. Huzzah?

Today’s Competitive Wordle Score

I get 0 points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Bot. -1 again! Yikes!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The etymology of the word “sleep” traces its origins back to Old English. The word “sleep” in Old English was “slēpan,” which means to be inactive or dormant. This Old English term evolved from the Proto-Germanic “*slēpanan,” which has similar meanings. Going even further back, it is believed to have originated from the Proto-Indo-European root “*slēb-“, which is associated with the concept of slackness or looseness.

This etymological lineage reflects the relaxation and inactivity that characterizes sleep. Over time, the word evolved through various forms in Middle English like “slepen” and eventually settled into the modern English form “sleep” that we use today. The evolution of the word mirrors the changes in linguistic patterns and pronunciations over centuries in the Germanic language family.

Play Competitive Wordle Against Me!

I’ve been playing a cutthroat game of PvP Wordle against my nemesis Wordle But. Now you should play against me! I can be your nemesis! (And your helpful Wordle guide, of course). You can also play against the Bot if you have a New York Times subscription.

Here are the rules:

  • 1 point for getting the Wordle in 3 guesses.
  • 2 points for getting it in 2 guesses.
  • 3 points for getting it in 1 guess.
  • 1 point for beating me
  • 0 points for getting it in 4 guesses.
  • -1 point for getting it in 5 guesses.
  • -2 points for getting it in 6 guesses.
  • -3 points for losing.
  • -1 point for losing to me

You can either keep a running tally of your score if that’s your jam or just play day-to-day if you prefer.
