The Biggest Technology Trends This Year

News RoomNews RoomDecember 9, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

What are the biggest technology trends that you’re noticing this year outside of AI? originally appeared on Quora: the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.

Answer by Trina Van Pelt, VP and Senior Managing Director at Intel Capital, on Quora:

Three technology trends besides “pure AI” that I’m tracking include the convergence of physical and digital worlds, the data ecosystem for insights developed with transparency and trust, and the bidirectional feedback loop of science and technology.

The convergence of physical and digital worlds from digitization silos is powerful. It’s already evident in robotics, digital twins, the metaverse and augmented reality – and we’re just beginning. One example is in the transformation of the labor economy to leverage technology to minimize employee injury and churn while improving collaboration and efficiency. Humanoid robotics can complete repetitive tasks prone to injury. Computer vision enables the merger of digital and physical worlds to streamline tasks, improve ergonomics, optimize workplace conditions, and enable collaborative remote maintenance. It’s all about finding the right balance between human expertise and technological innovation.

Data provides insights into business processes, market shifts, consumers, investors, and entire industries. Yet despite significant investments, not all data architectures and management systems are leading edge nor are strategies adequate to act on or share insights based on massive amounts of unstructured data. Data alone isn’t enough – data normalization, availability, and communications technology from cloud to edge is key. Data and connectivity create the conditions for transparency and trust. Whether seeking to improve operational efficiency, transform relationships with customers, or provide critical analytics and insights to guide business decisions.

The bidirectional feedback loop of science and technology enables more rapid innovation to address challenges in the global supply chain, climate change, and medicine. Specifically, I’m tracking advanced materials for energy and exploring the geospatial frontier. For example, the ambitious push for autonomous electric vehicles hinges on the availability of advanced battery technology. Could the solution lie in exploring new materials, nanotechnological, self-healing capabilities, or innovative approaches to energy storage? While we may not have all the answers yet, it’s clear that addressing this bottleneck is crucial for supply chains, mobility solutions and climate impact.
