Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge nightmare is far from over, as the show performed well enough and is cheap enough to land a season 2 on Netflix. Now it’s stumbled into controversy as its winner, announced in this week’s finale, still hasn’t gotten her $4.56 million yet, but maybe that was to avoid…spoilers? I don’t know.
Regardless, after the season finale and winner reveal put Squid Game back on the top of the Netflix top 10 list, it’s quickly fallen down the charts and has been replaced by a new series. That would be My Life with the Walter Boys, an adaptation of an Ali Novak book starring a bunch of hot people who’s names you probably don’t know. It’s a romantic drama about a teen moving into a small town after a tragedy and meeting uh, the Walter Boys, I suppose. While the 2014 book is one-off feature, interestingly, the show is not being labeled as a miniseries, implying it may go beyond the source material for more seasons. Either that or it doesn’t finish the first book by the end.
Number two on the list is World War II: From the Frontlines, a documentary with a bunch of archival footage from the war that is proving quite popular, narrated by John Boyega. It reminds me that Apple TV is about to air Masters of the Air early next year, which should be a powerful return to WWII in the vein of Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
Elsewhere, Obliterated is falling from its brief stint at #1, down to number four. No word on whether it’s been renewed for season 2 yet, but it’s still really early to know that. Unless you’re Squid Game, I guess.
A six episode French series called Blood Coast has landed lower on the list, which, like Obliterated, features a “rogue police captain and a daredevil team” defending Marseille. School Spirits continues to hang out at the bottom of the list, and despite starring Cobra Kai’s Peyton List, without some improvement, it feels like yet another YA, supernatural series starring a young actress that will be canceled by Netflix. It’s practically tradition at this point.
Ending the list is Virgin River, which did not do terribly well this season, but it’s already renewed as one of Netflix’s favorite low-key sleeper hits that’s really cheap to make. Soon enough, we will see the final episodes of The Crown arrive, then at the end of the month, Netflix’s highest profile project is probably Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, where one of two movies will be released closer to the holiday.
