Nvidia Planning January RTX 40-Series Super Launch With RTX 4070 Super

News RoomNews RoomDecember 20, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

Nvidia looks set to launch three new RTX 40-series gaming graphics cards in January, starting with the RTX 4070 Super, followed by the RTX 4070 Ti Super and RTX 4080 Super on the last day of the month.

The launch comes a little over a year since the RTX 4080 landed and 16 months after we first heard about the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080. A series of rumors and leaked information have surfaced over the last week, with website ITHome (via Videocards) piecing together a clearer picture of everything we know so far.

Launch schedule and pricing

The latest information points to a January 8th 2024 announcement, which coincides with the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. If Nvidia was to use any events to announce the new cards, this one would be high on the list.

Next comes the RTX 4070 Super, with a launch date of January 17th, followed by the RTX 4070 Ti Super on January 24th and January 31st for the RTX 4080 Super.

There are no indications of how much the new cards will cost, but it’s suggested that the RTX 4080 Super and RTX 4070 Ti Super will replace the existing RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti accordingly. However, the RTX 4070 Super is rumored to sit alongside the RTX 4070 for now.

Pricing is pure conjecture for now, but PCGamesN reported last month that pricing for the new cards could actually be cheaper than their predecessors, at least compared to their launch prices. The knock-on effect, of course, will be that the new cards should push pricing down of current models, assuming of course the pricing rumors are true. That would be welcome news, but take that with a hefty dose of salt for now.

Specifications

There’s plenty of interesting information surrounding the specifications, with all three new cards getting more CUDA cores for a start. Super cards often feature higher clock speeds too, but RTX 4070 Ti Super is said to be receiving a memory upgrade from 12GB GDDR6X to 16GB, moving it in line with AMD, which has 16GB minimum on most of its Radeon RX 7000-series cards.

Depending on the price, this could make it much more attractive, especially as even the RTX 4060 has a 16GB-equipped varient. The RTX 4070 Super looks set to receive a sizeable CUDA core increase from 5,888 with the 4070, to 7,168 with the new model, not far off the standard RTX 4070 Ti’s 7,680.

Perhaps the more disappointing upgrade is the RTX 4080 Super. It will stick with 16GB of GDDR6X memory and only gain around 500 CUDA cores, rising from 9,728 to 10,240. However, we don’t know anything about frequencies yet, so it’s gains could come more from higher core and memory speeds.
