How To Unleash The Potential Of AI Copilots In Manufacturing

News RoomNews RoomDecember 13, 2023No Comments4 Mins Read

Shahar Chen, CEO and Co-founder of Aquant, a company focused on delivering generative AI solutions to transform the service industry.

For years, AI has promised numerous benefits to workers such as increased productivity and the freedom to focus on substantial tasks rather than tedious administrative work. However, these promises often fell short. Can “copilots” be the breakthrough we’ve been waiting for and fulfill these long-standing promises?

Copilots are changing the way employees engage with data, transcending industry boundaries. While traditional data interaction involves using dashboards, the reality is that most people prefer not to interact with data in this way. I firmly believe copilots represent the future of data interaction and have the potential to significantly enhance operational efficiency, particularly in the service industry but across all fields.

In this article, I’ll focus on how copilots can help alleviate some of the challenges that service teams face in the manufacturing industry—specifically, any team that is responsible for servicing and maintaining complex devices in fields like healthcare, commercial food, printing and so on. I’ll also highlight practical steps these organizations can take to kick-start their copilot journey.

The Widening Service Gap

Service teams responsible for maintaining complex devices and machines (i.e., MRI machines, commercial printers, industrial ovens, etc.) are currently grappling with an unprecedented wave of retirements along with a shortage of skilled talent needed to fill the void, commonly referred to as “brain drain.” This exodus of experienced workers is causing ongoing challenges.

On top of that, devices and machines are evolving (marked by features like IoT and remote connectivity) and becoming increasingly complex. These machines are expected to last up to a decade, underlining the importance of quality service and maintenance. However, this increasing complexity is stretching the limits of the remaining workers, resulting in a widening gap between customer expectations and the skills/capacity of the service workforce. The lack of additional resources will only exacerbate this growing gap.

Copilots can not only alleviate the challenges that service workers face, but they can also provide every stakeholder in the service journey with the ability to interact with data in a user-friendly and approachable manner—and in a way that will drive significant improvements in overall service delivery and customer experience.

What Is A Copilot?

Copilots use generative AI to create human-like text and deliver clear, concise and conversational responses to questions by processing raw data. However, achieving advanced and accurate copilots goes beyond this. Mature copilots heavily depend on data refinement processes like natural language processing and benchmarking. These processes ensure that the insights they offer are not only accurate and relevant but also actionable and customized to the user’s specific requirements.

Embarking On The Path To Implementing AI-Powered Copilots

Service teams are embarking on a transformative journey with the implementation of AI-powered copilots, and the question arises: Where do we begin? Let’s simplify the process into three key steps:

1. Data transformation. This foundational step is a meticulous process involving the gathering, cleaning and organizing of unstructured data. This lays the groundwork for a robust AI framework. Prioritizing data quality is crucial and ensures a smooth transition to effectively use and derive value from AI copilots.

2. KPI alignment. Aligning key performance indicators (KPIs) with specific business outcomes is essential not only for optimizing copilot performance but also for measuring the application’s impact and efficacy. These defined metrics act as guiding stars, steering service teams toward tangible and strategic goals.

3. Human-in-the-loop approach. This ensures precision and accuracy. By infusing data sets with tribal knowledge (aka subject matter expertise), service teams can refine models and create a seamless collaboration between human insights and AI capabilities. Additionally, organizations can expedite the implementation of AI by strategically leveraging existing algorithms such as large language models (LLMs) and reinforcement learning. This involves capitalizing on proven solutions to enhance capabilities swiftly.

As we approach 2024, the challenge lies in operationalizing AI copilots within enterprises. Building a copilot in-house is one potential option—although it might not be the most efficient option. Outsourcing AI solutions can allow vendors to bring deep industry expertise, and mature copilots may even have a robust foundation of industry benchmarks that allow service teams to measure their progress against industry standards.

The journey to AI-powered copilots is more than a technological endeavor. It symbolizes a company’s commitment to innovation—driving service teams toward improved efficiency and enhanced customer experiences while narrowing the ever-widening service gap.
