Can You Change Your ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ Hero’s Appearance? Maybe Soon

News RoomNews RoomAugust 15, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

Baldur’s Gate 3 has a great character creation system, and it better, given that you will be seeing your character for literally dozens of hours based on all the (voiceless) conversations you’ll have.

But it’s easy to make a character and then, over time, have a few…regrets. There is currently no way to change your character’s appearance in Baldur’s Gate 3 after creation, which seems wild, given the absolutely insane amount of customization present in all other aspects of the game. My guess is that like similar games, this may have something to do with hard encoding your look into a bunch of conversations and cutscenes from the moment of creation. But, a solution may be coming.

The most Twitter active member of the Baldur’s Gate team, Larian’s director of publishing, said that yes, something is being worked on to change your hero’s appearance post-creation:

It’s a short tweet, but enough to know something is being built for it, though no timeline on it yet. Baldur’s has been pretty quick with bug fixes, but this would be a new feature. Hopefully soon, however.

Baldur’s doesn’t do something that a few games do, which offers different views of your character in different settings, different lighting. It reminds me of Mass Effect, where you’d make a Shepard who looked good in creation, and then in the game itself, you’re like “yeauughh what?”

My Baldur’s hero isn’t quite that bad. She’s a nice looking half-elf. However, I thought I was giving her black hair with subtle red highlights. Turns out, not subtle! She looks like she works at Hot Topic. Plus, I have seen a whole bunch of cool creations from other players, and I wish I did something a bit more wild, given the fantasy setting. She’s a bit dull. Though we don’t know if this ability to change your appearance will mean you can just change your hair, or if you could change your entire race. I kind of doubt it’s the latter, as that would change actual plot points at times, I believe.

Still, it’s a welcome addition to the game, and I am glad to hear they’re working on it. I fully believe no RPG should ever not allow you to change at least your hair after release, but many don’t, which can be frustrating. We’ll have to stay tuned for when this is actually being patched in.
