A Classic Sega Saturn ‘Gundam’ Game Is Getting Some Amazing New Toys

News RoomNews RoomDecember 7, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

One of the best series of Gundam games ever made is the Blue Destiny trilogy released on the Sega Saturn, and now we have some new toys on the way for it.

Originally released back in 1996, the game was an interesting departure compared to other Gundam games, as it had you pilot grunt mobile suits in a first-person cockpit view.

Split into three parts, the games dealt with the ramifications of a new technology that copied a Newtype consciousness into a computer to give regular pilots an edge. Called the EXAM System, it was also pretty unstable.

Over the course of the games, you went from a regular GM mobile suit to an experimental EXAM System based GM and eventually a prototype EXAM System Gundam.

However, while you were on the side of the Federation, the EXAM System technology originated from Zeon. With Zeon having their own EXAM System capable mobile suit, that of the Efreet Kai.

Much of this was covered in a pretty solid manga adaptation as well, but that ended before the events of the third game, where you end up in space.

The mecha designs were also interesting because they borrowed a lot from Gundam 0080 and 08th MS Team, with the Blue Destiny mecha designs being very much inspired by the Ground Gundams from the latter anime.

Over the years, we’ve seen the Blue Destiny mecha pop-up in other games and even get an ersatz remake in the form of the rather disappointing Gundam: Side Stories on the PlayStation 3.

However, we’ve never had proper Robot Damashii toys of these designs before and what’s interesting here is that we are pretty much getting the whole set. From the grunt GM you start with, to the Efreet Kai, the Blue Destiny GM and the two Blue Destiny Gundams from the third game.

The bizarre part about all of this is that these toys are part of the Ver ANIME spin-off line, despite the fact that they don’t come from an anime at all.

In any case, fans of the Blue Destiny games are finally getting the toys they deserve, with the first being the Efreet Kai this December, with the Blue Destiny Gundams available for pre-order from tomorrow via Premium Bandai.
