It’s another wintry spring day here in the mountains, which means it’s the perfect time to stay inside watching movies, playing board games or video games, or solving fun puzzle games like Wordle and the new game from the New York Times: Strands.
Read on for help with today’s puzzle, which wasn’t quite as tricky as the last couple days but still had me scratching my head for a good while.
How To Play Strands
The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s in beta for now, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day.
There’s a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.
You’ll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links two opposite sides of the board. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.

Once you find the Spangram it’s typically pretty easy to find the rest of the day’s words, but I had trouble with a couple of these. Here’s the full list:
- Comic
- Portrait
- Sketch
- Design
- Cartoon
- Doodle
I got a little mixed up with today’s Strands because I came across the word graphic and it didn’t work. Graphics also didn’t work, but I was pretty sure that the word wasn’t just in there—so clearly tied to the theme—by coincidence. I went ahead and took a hint and got comic which only confirmed that I was onto something with graphic. Once I found sketch I knew I was right, and went back and looked more closely, only then realizing I could tie it to art. What a peculiar Spangram, though! Graphicart ought to be two words. I guess Spangrams don’t have to be just one word?
In any case, from here it went pretty quickly, with doodle, design, cartoon and portrait all falling like dominoes once I’d sorted out the Spangram.
