The Gundam Calibarn as seen towards the end of Witch from Mercury will follow in the Gundam Aerial’s footsteps and get a gorgeous chogokin toy later this year.
If you remember the Gundam Aerial received a very nice chogokin toy last year. In my review, I hoped that more mobile suits would get this treatment.
This is because the normal route for diecast Gundam toys is via the Metal Build toyline. However, the Metal Build toys are heavily redesigned to look more athletic.
That’s why the regular chogokin approach is something I prefer, as it’s closer to the original anime design and also tends to feature lighting gimmicks as well.
The Calibarn also follows on with the references to Shakespeare’s The Tempest, named after the character Caliban, as well as the legendary sword Caliburn from Arthurian legend.
The design itself did prove popular and already received a very nice Robot Damashii toy.
The only issue here is that unlike the Gundam Aerial chogokin, which went on general sale, this Gundam Calibarn chogokin will be released via Premium Bandai.
The good news is that the toy is already listed on the US Premium Bandai site, with pre-orders starting tomorrow for a September release and priced at $295.
The price point is higher because this is a much bigger toy than the Robot Damashii version and features a lot of diecast metal (as well as the aforementioned lighting gimmicks). Although, by chogokin standards it’s not that expensive.
Anyway, this Gundam Calibarn chogokin looks fantastic and the Variable Rod Rifle “broom” will surely make this mechanical witch a very nice display piece once it is released later this year.
