‘Escape From Tarkov’ Adds Microtransactions For Cosmetic Skins

News RoomNews RoomMarch 14, 2024No Comments3 Mins Read

Today Battlestate Games has added another set of microtransactions to Escape From Tarkov in the form of cosmetic clothing items your character can wear. The items cost real-world money to unlock, starting at €5 ($5.47) and rising to €12 ($13.13). However, as with most Tarkov transactions, fees increase that to €15.26 ($16.70) for the most expensive option.

There are three clothing bundles for each faction on offer, with the Bears getting the Oldschool bundle for €5, the Zaslon bundle for €7 and the G99 bundle for €12. The USECs get the Woodland Infiltrator bundle for €5, the Night Patrol bundle for €7 and the Urban Responder bundle for €12.

In order to purchase any of the cosmetic bundles you will need to head to the Escape From Tarkov website and make sure you are signed in. From the expansions page, you can find the clothing option, select the bundle you want to buy and then check out. Once payment has been completed your clothing items will be unlocked in the game, and you can equip them from the Ragman services menu. Any purchased items will remain unlocked forever and will not be reset with a new wipe.

Of course, all the items in the bundle currently on sale can be earned in-game through virtual currency. While the items on sale for real money are towards the higher end of the clothes that Ragman sells, they certainly aren’t expensive at this stage in the wipe, so why anyone would want to spend real money on these is a bit of a mystery.

For only a few million Roubles you could unlock the most expensive items on sale, and that wouldn’t take more than a few runs to earn at this point. However, at the start of a wipe they will of course be harder to obtain and purchasing them will allow you to have them from day one of the wipe, perhaps increasing your survival chances for people who are only looking for default player skins early on.

Of the three sets of microtransactions added to Escape From Tarkov in recent weeks, this feels like the most desperate attempt to bring in some money without offering much in the way of value. The option to buy the offline co-op mode was a great addition that needed to be made following the removal of the Edge of Darkness edition, and while the extra stash space was highly overpriced, it did offer some new and useful functionality. These microtransactions, however, add nothing new, charge you real money to unlock something already in the game and don’t really offer a lot for the service.

Personally, I’ll usually unlock one of the cheaper clothing options within a week or so of the wipe and then forget about it until the next wipe happens, and even if I did want to change things up, money is so freely available at this stage in the wipe that unlocking these items normally would not take much work.

If this is a test bed for skins and cosmetics that can only be acquired through microtransactions then it makes a little more sense, but as of right now, this feels like a somewhat desperate attempt to bring in some more cash quickly and I can’t see many people falling for it.
