A Lot Of ‘Macross’ Anime Is Coming To Disney+, But There’s A Catch

News RoomNews RoomMarch 18, 2024No Comments2 Mins Read

It took a good while for this to shake out, but a lot of classic Macross anime will finally be getting a global streaming release courtesy of Disney+, but there’s a catch.

While specific release details are to be revealed at Anime Japan this coming weekend, the main news is that we are getting a lot of Macross anime via Disney+.

Shows such as Macross 7, which have not had a proper global release until now, are part of this deal. As are Macross Frontier, Macross Plus, Macross II and Macross Delta.

We are also getting all the various flavors of specials and movie spin-offs from these shows, including Flashback 2012.

However, the big two omissions in terms of international releases are the original Macross TV series and the movie Do You Remember Love?.

Interestingly, these two anime will be available in Japan via Disney+, but they are not coming Westward via this streaming service.

This ties in with the prior announcement of physical releases of these anime, but to have it doubly confirmed that international fans of Macross will still be locked out from the original TV series and movie is disappointing.

No doubt Harmony Gold are to blame here, as the original Macross TV series was used to make Robotech, along with Southern Cross and MOSPEADA.

That said, I’m hoping that whatever legal issues are hindering this situation are resolved at some point soon.

Considering that we’ve finally managed to get all the other major Macross shows an international release, it’s saddening that the starting point for the Macross saga is still landlocked to Japan.
