Google Prepares Pixel Fold 2 Camera Update

News RoomNews RoomFebruary 24, 2024No Comments2 Mins Read

Google’s bookish Pixel Fold is being reinvented for 2024, with a key part of the Pixel iconography set for a change.

The details around the Pixel Fold 2 come from the respected team at MySmartPrix, with concept images and photos built up from many leaks and details available online.

One of the key changes is to the primary camera. The first Pixel Fold had a solid camera bar across the rear panel. This matched the design language seen in the Pixel 6 smartphones—a design carried through to the current Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro that offered Google a distinctive silhouette on its phones. The Fold 2 skips this bar, instead of going for a more traditional raised island for the camera’s two lenses and associated elements.

Compared to the Pixel Fold, the Fold 2’s solution for the camera looks clunky and out of place.

Also featured are two selfie cameras, one on the cover display in a regular punch-out hole and a second under-display camera for the inner display. Going under the display means an unobstructed view of the full panel, although we shall have to see just how invisible the camera is when the handset is released and reviewed.

Finally, like many foldables in 2024, the Fold 2 is tweaking the aspect ratio of previous models to create a more user-friendly cover display and larger internal screen. In the case of the Pixel Fold 2, it’s going in the opposite direction seen by the likes of the Galaxy Z Fold range… the Pixel Fold’s squat screen will be stretched to give it a more classical look for a smartphone, at least when closed.

For many reviewers, last year’s Pixel Fold was an impressive debut for Google in the foldable space but it was clearly a first-generation product, but it showed, in conjunction with the changes to Android, that Google was taking this space seriously. That will only be bolstered by a second device, especially one that takes the lessons from 2023’s debut device.
