Trying to score a pre-order for a $3,500 face computer? Good luck: Apple appears to be out of stock of Apple Vision Pro headsets, at least for the moment, in every city and state. Every single geographic region I’ve tried around the United States has the same message:
“There’s no availability within your location. Please try another search.”
That’s the case so far in:
- Seattle
- Bellingham
- Portland
- New York
- Miami
- Salt Lake City
- Oklahoma
- Austin
- And many other locations I checked …
I did find availability in Dallas, Texas, momentarily. Then when I clicked through for pick-up details, the screen refreshed to the same message: no availability. In other words: I didn’t get up early enough.
Deliveries will start on February 2, and it’s possible the out of stock situation isn’t as much about hardware as it is about in-store experience. Apple Vision Pro will require an extensive orientation, and it’s possible Apple is limiting orders to its ability to deliver that in-store experience.
What we do know now is that the pre-order includes scanning your face with a Face ID-compatible device to get started. Once that’s done, Apple will ask if you wear glasses or contacts, and determine if you’ll need special accessories for eyewear. After all that, you’ll be able to select from the base model or two other options:
- 256GB: $3,499
- 512GB: $3,699
- 1TB: $3,899
Included in the box will be:
- The Apple Vision Pro
- A dual loop band
- A protective cover (but not a case)
- The external Apple Vision Pro battery
- A light seal cushion
- A polishing cloth
- And a USB-C charging cord with power adapter
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is also reporting that deliveries are being delayed to March. Most likely there will be an initial surge in orders from the Apple faithful and the VR professionals which will taper off in a few weeks or a month, and then the rest of us will also be able to splurge on a soon-t0-be-outdated tech toy.
