Today’s Wordle #944 Hints, Clues And Answer For Friday, January 19th

News RoomNews RoomJanuary 19, 2024No Comments4 Mins Read

TGIF! The weekend is almost here. It’s melty weather around these parts. We still have snow on the ground but it’s retreating into the dirt as warmer days—and nights—take their toll on the ice.

It looks like more snow might be on the way this weekend, but overall things stay nice and (relatively) toasty compared to the couple weeks of near-0 degree temperatures we had. Other parts of the country have been hit harder with major snowstorms. I’m just enjoying the sunshine and contemplating February. Last year we never got so cold but we were hit with more snow than I’d seen in years.

In any case, yesterday I doled out a belated Wordle Wednesday riddle (oops) and today I will reveal the answer.

Yesterday’s riddle:

What ancient invention allows people to see through walls?

The answer: Windows.

Yeah, not the most challenging riddle ever, I know.

Okay, let’s Wordle!

How To Solve Today’s Word

The Hint: A disembodied hand.

The Clue: This word has far more consonants than vowels in it.

Wordle Bot Analysis

After each Wordle I solve I head over to the Wordle Bot homepage to see how my guessing game was.

Can you solve today’s phrase?

Trope popped into my head as a reasonably decent starting word today and I wasn’t wrong. While I walked away with just one green box, I learned later that only 37 possible solutions remained.

I guessed tangy hoping to get the answer in 2 rather than try all new letters. I wasn’t so lucky, but this did leave me with just one possible solution which I eventually figured out: thing for the win!

Today’s Score

I’m starting to think I may never beat the Wordle Bot again now that it’s using trace as a starting word. Today I tied, which gets me zero points, but at least I get 1 point for guessing in three!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “thing” has a fascinating etymology rooted in ancient history. It originates from Old Norse “þing” meaning “assembly, meeting.” This term referred to a governing assembly in medieval Scandinavian societies where free men would gather to discuss and decide on communal matters.

The word evolved from this specific meaning of a gathering or assembly to a more general sense of “an event, a happening” in Middle English. Over time, its meaning shifted further to refer to “a material object,” “matter, affair,” and eventually to the modern English usage of “thing” as a general term for an entity, object, or matter.

This evolution from a specific legal or political context to a general term for an object reflects the dynamic nature of language and how words can dramatically shift in meaning over centuries.

Play Competitive Wordle Against Me!

I’ve been playing a cutthroat game of PvP Wordle against my nemesis Wordle But. Now you should play against me! I can be your nemesis! (And your helpful Wordle guide, of course). You can also play against the Bot if you have a New York Times subscription.

Here are the rules:

  • 1 point for getting the Wordle in 3 guesses.
  • 2 points for getting it in 2 guesses.
  • 3 points for getting it in 1 guess.
  • 1 point for beating me
  • 0 points for getting it in 4 guesses.
  • -1 point for getting it in 5 guesses.
  • -2 points for getting it in 6 guesses.
  • -3 points for losing.
  • -1 point for losing to me

You can either keep a running tally of your score if that’s your jam or just play day-to-day if you prefer.
