In the wake of a devastating hack and subsequent leak that released countless images, videos, files and even playable builds of games within Insomniac, the developer has finally surfaced to issue a comment on what happened, and their future plans going forward.
They talk about how it’s taken an understandable “emotional toll” on the team, especially with their personal information leaked which has been “extremely distressing for us,” they say.
In the message, they do provide an update about the Wolverine game, which is the project that suffered the most leaks, including full cast reveals, huge plot turns and even an early playable build on the game that’s running on PC and even Xbox (which players have come to realize comes with a DMCA if you download it). Here’s what Insomniac said:
“We want everyone to enjoy the games we develop as intended and as our players deserve. However, like Logan…Insomniac is resilient. Marvel’s Wolverine continues as planned. The game is in early production and will no doubt greatly evolve throughout development, as do all our plans. While we appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm, we will share official information about Marvel’s Wolverine when the time is right.”
There was some speculation that as a way of combating this leak, Insomniac could put together something “official” from Wolverine to release, given that we’ve seen nothing since its 2021 debut teaser. But in the context of the complexities of this hack, that’s the last thing they’re thinking about or devoting energy to, I imagine.
They do not talk about a delay to the game or anything, as it was previously rumored to be out in 2024, three years after its debut spot, but one year after Spider-Man 2? Unlikely, and it appears it’s going to be more like 2026 instead. But yes, even though they don’t talk about delays, it’s certainly likely this leak has dramatic effects on the game. I do not imagine they will restructure the entire story to get around the spoilers that have been leaked, however, nor do I think they should.
Insomniac does not touch on wider aspects of the leak, including a list of their planned games through 2030, and a significant deal with Marvel going forward. Not that I’d expect them to, as why would they confirm that at this point? And in a message like this? Definitely not.
I, and most everyone, continue to feel for Insomniac throughout this, as it genuinely is one of the worst leaks we’ve seen in industry history, up there with Halo 2, Half-Life 2 and the Nintendo Gigaleak. It will no doubt have significant ramifications within the studio even if they are putting on a brave face, and we may not know how exactly it changes or alters Wolverine until a long while from now.
