Warning: A Playable ‘Wolverine’ Build Has Leaked After Insomniac Hack, Spoilers Abound

News RoomNews RoomDecember 21, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

After one of the worst hacks in industry history, problems only continue to mount for Insomniac. Now, a fully playable, extremely early version of the upcoming Wolverine game has leaked online and is available for (obviously illegal) public download.

As a result, there are countless spoilers from the game that are surfacing, even more than before from video clips and things like cast listings. Given that the game is allegedly not arriving until 2026, that’s just an enormous amount of time for leaks to circulate, and there’s been some talk Insomniac may even be forced to change some story elements as a result of the hack and leaks like…a fully playable game build.

I will obviously not be going into story spoilers here, as that’s not something I don’t think anyone needs to deem “newsworthy,” and is just ruining something for its own sake. I would not advise downloading the game, not just for you know, moral reasons, but the fact that a build potentially years ahead of launch is going to be extremely unpolished and unfinished and I don’t see any way that is an optimal way to experience the game. And of course there are security risks to you personally by downloading a ton of hacked and released files from an unfinished game.

It’s just an unmitigated disaster for Sony and Insomniac at this point. We have only seen this a few times in history. Halo 2 leaked in its entirety a month before its release. Half-Life 2 code leaked delaying the game an entire year. It remains to be seen how this affects Wolverine development, but it’s easy to imagine this does not produce some sort of delay to this game or others, short or long.

As much as I’d like to think players who are looking forward to Wolverine and Insomniac’s future games will ban together, avoid disseminating the leaks further, that’s just not going to happen, and has not been happening. Specially, I’ve seen this devolve into a lot of console war fighting, players using early Wolverine footage to criticize it in some way, or devolving into discussions about how people are being too “nice” to Insomniac given the way other leaks have been covered in the past. It’s a mess, and there is not exactly solidarity among the gaming community here, which is not shocking.

I would stay away from this build for multiple reasons. But even attempting to avoid all this, being online…anywhere is a barrage of spoilers at this point, and with many years to go, dodging them is going to be close to impossible for many fans, which is devastating for Insomniac, among all the other issues the hack has created.
