Today’s Wordle #909 Hints, Clues And Answer For Friday, December 15th

News RoomNews RoomDecember 15, 2023No Comments4 Mins Read

Another day, another Wordle. The viral word puzzler isn’t the most popular word game out there anymore (I think that goes to the perennial favorite, the New York Times Crossword, followed by Connections) but it’s still going strong and so my daily Wordle column/guide continues.

It’s Friday (huzzah!) which means those of us playing Competitive Wordle get 2XP on all wins and losses.

It also means the new Wonka movie is out, as is the new season of Reacher on Amazon Prime. So much to see these days! I just went to The Boy and the Heron, the latest film from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, and it was terrific! You can read my review here.

Alright, let’s Wordle!

How To Solve Today’s Word

The Hint: The subject of discussion.

The Clue: This word begins and ends with a consonant.

Wordle Bot Analysis

After each Wordle I solve I head over to the Wordle Bot homepage to see how my guessing game was.

Can you solve today’s phrase?

I started things off right today, clearly, with the word chore which is a lot more fun as an opening Wordle guess than as an activity, though lord knows I spend an ungodly amount of time on chores! Don’t we all!

Plain was an attempt to get more letters by guessing all new ones for my second guess, which is a risky bet. I was tempted to guess bacon because, well, yummy! But I figured there were too many possible locations for the ‘C’ and the ‘O’ still so I might as well guess new letters.

This was a smart move—unlike eating bacon—and left me with just two options to choose from that I could come up with: topic or optic. It was a coin toss and I guessed correctly!

Today’s Competitive Wordle Score

I get 1 point for guessing in three and 0 points for tying Wordle Bot. Double that for 2XP Friday for a grand total of 2 points—the most I’ve gotten in a hot minute! Huzzah!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The etymology of the word “topic” traces back to ancient Greek. It originates from the Greek word ‘τόπος’ (topos), meaning “place” or “location.” Over time, this concept evolved to include metaphorical places or subjects of discussion, hence our modern usage of “topic” to refer to the subject of conversation or thought.

In later Latin, the word became ‘topicus,’ referring to something related to a place or topic. This form was then adopted into Middle English as ‘topic,’ retaining the meaning related to subjects or themes of discussion.

The evolution of the word reflects the broadening of its meaning from a physical place to an abstract concept of an area or subject of discussion or thought.

Play Competitive Wordle Against Me!

I’ve been playing a cutthroat game of PvP Wordle against my nemesis Wordle But. Now you should play against me! I can be your nemesis! (And your helpful Wordle guide, of course). You can also play against the Bot if you have a New York Times subscription.

Here are the rules:

  • 1 point for getting the Wordle in 3 guesses.
  • 2 points for getting it in 2 guesses.
  • 3 points for getting it in 1 guess.
  • 1 point for beating me
  • 0 points for getting it in 4 guesses.
  • -1 point for getting it in 5 guesses.
  • -2 points for getting it in 6 guesses.
  • -3 points for losing.
  • -1 point for losing to me

You can either keep a running tally of your score if that’s your jam or just play day-to-day if you prefer.
