Apple iOS 17.2 iPhone Software Release: Should You Upgrade?

News RoomNews RoomDecember 14, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

The much-anticipated iOS 17.2 update is now live and it has lots of new features, bug squishes and problem fixes. Here’s how it’s been received since its launch—and please note I’ll be updating this post in a few days with a final thought on whether you should upgrade or not.

Who Is It For And How Do You Get It?

Apple iOS 17.2 works with all iPhones that can run iOS 17, that is, handsets from the iPhone XS onwards, including iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14 and the latest iPhone 15 series. It also includes the iPhone SE second-and third-generation phones. Updates are available automatically but you will likely get them on your iPhone sooner if you click on Settings, then General, then Software Update.

What It’s About

This update has plenty of cool new features, such as the long-awaited Journal app, plus plenty of fixes and solutions to previous problems. There is an additional shortcut for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max to make it easy to translate stuff on the fly using the Action Button. There are also new features for AirDrop, Messages (including turning off inline corrections as you type), default notifications and more. For full details of what’s there, turn to Apple’s notes, link below, or to a detailed account here on Forbes.

Apple Release Notes

Apple’s notes for the release can be found here.

Apple iOS 17.2 Security

There are two security issues addressing problems with WebKit, the bit that is at the heart of the Safari browser. Already, some users are saying that Safari is “snappier” since the update has landed. Another issue has related to the Kernel and means an app could reach further than it should.

Initial Reactions

There’s been a pretty positive initial response to this release, with some grumbles that issues like the keyboard problems are not quite gone, though for some removing inline changes has helped. Some have noted that Journal is only available on the iPhone and could have been more useful if an iPad version was also accessible. Maybe that will come later. For now, one comments, “Not giving journal app on the iPad/macs is such a missed opportunity.” One user says “battery is insane now”.

But in terms of making things worse, it doesn’t look like iOS 17.2 has anything to worry about.

Apple iOS 17.1 Initial Verdict: Update

Things are looking pretty good for now, though I’ll be checking rigorously across the next few days and will be sure to add any breaking news. So, please check back.
