Fortnite is back with another big live event, the kind it used to do in its glory days. They’re calling it the “Big Bang,” and leaks have already unearthed that it will involve outside forces like Eminem and LEGO, two new collaborations that would be seemingly unrelated, but as the image above shows, it will also integrate rhythm and racing modes.
That’s also the famed rocket where its launch was one of the first, most talked-about events in Fortnite’s timeline. It will return for The Big Bang which Epic has announced will take place on December 2, 2023 at 2 PM ET. Downtime will begin immediately after, and then Chapter 5 will launch on December 3, ending the OG re-run of Fortnite that’s been going on all month. It’s possible some elements of the OG map will carry over, though we have seen reported leaks of the new map, which shares more similarities to the Chapter 2 map. Albeit it’s not a copy like what we’ve seen with the OG.
Epic has promised three things with the Big Bang event, according to their announcement:
- It’s an unforgettable event
- It is evolving things as you know them
- There’s a memorable reveal toward the end.
The first two sound pretty standard, albeit you may assume that with that declaration, this might be one of the biggest events the game has seen. Its filesize alone seems to indicate that.
The third item? I don’t know what that could mean. Fortnite has done weird “reveals” in the past, like flipping the map over to have the new one underneath it, or revealing that The Rock was playing a formerly helmeted character. Here, I assume the reveal is not Eminem or LEGO related, and may have something to do with the larger future of the franchise.
This event also brought with it a reversal of Epic’s age-restriction for cosmetics, which was going to apply to the event despite happening in the Teen rated battle royale portion of the game. The backlash was so intense they rolled back the concept until they can fix the idea, and that means you can wear any skin to this you want. That whole thing has been an extremely bizarre saga.
It’s been a while since I cared about much of anything in Fortnite, but I will go to this and at least see what happens like the good old days. I remember stuff like the meteor and the rocket and cube as really cool events at the time, and even though those days are long past, maybe the game still has it in it to surprise us.
