OWC Unveils High-Capacity Atlas Ultra CFexpress Memory Cards

News RoomNews RoomJune 28, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

The shift to digital filmmaking and the increasing popularity of large sensor cameras are fuelling demands for ever-larger storage cards that are fast enough to cope with heavy workloads like 4K and 8K video.

To address this increasing demand, OWC has announced the expansion of its OWC Atlas Ecosystem with the release of 1TB and 2TB Atlas Ultra CFexpress memory cards. The new and high-capacity memory cards can achieve write speeds up to 1700MB/s, plus read speeds of 1850MB/s. According to OWC, those figures are real-world speeds and both cards can sustain a minimum write speed of 1500MB/s.

The Atlas Ultra CFexpress cards have been specifically designed for the increasing demands from professional filmmakers who are shooting 8K RAW video using cinema-grade cameras like the RED V-Raptor/XL and Komodo-X and flagship professional mirrorless cameras like the Nikon Z8 and Z9 or Canon R5C.

“As image resolution and color depth increase, recording time decreases. These higher-capacity cards are the perfect solution for longer recording times at the highest resolutions and bitrates. The larger capacity points are also incredibly performative, giving us best-in-class reading, writing and workflow optimization,” claims Ian Stone, Category Manager for OWC memory cards, in a press release.

OWC says it has a quality control process, meaning users can shoot with Atlas Ultra CFexpress cards without worrying about data bottlenecks or dropping data. When shooting scenes where there’s only one chance to get the money shot, users need to place all their trust and professional reputation in their cameras and the media they use. In high-stakes situations, there isn’t room for mistakes.

As well as offering high data speeds and dependable performance, OWC says the Atlas Ultra memory cards are physically robust and can withstand the most demanding locations and environmental challenges. These challenges can include putting cards through X-ray machines at airport security or having cards exposed to UV rays. The cards must also be resilient enough to withstand the damage from shocks, drops and extreme temperatures. Whether you are shooting in the Atacama desert or Antarctica, cards must perform reliably.

The new capacity points of the Atlas Ultra cards complete OWC’s ecosystem of cards, readers and software. OWC also produces Innergize software that works with all Atlas cards to keep them in top condition throughout their lifecycle. Innergize comes free of charge with the new 1TB and 2TB Atlas Ultra cards.

OWC has a whole ecosystem of hardware and software solutions for the creative process. Other manufacturers, especially SanDisk Pro, also offer similar complete workflow solutions. Still, it’s interesting to see a third-party supplier like OWC developing a workflow system for film and photo creatives that includes memory cards, card readers and software solutions such as Innergize and Copy That.

Pricing & Availability: OWC Atlas Ultra CFexpress 1TB and 2TB cards are now available at $599.99 from Macsales.com, amazon.com, bhphotovideo.com, and other dealers worldwide. OWC Innergize is now available for download for both Mac and Windows OWC Copy That is available for Mac on the OWC Software store.
