‘Destiny 2’ Servers May Actually Be Fixed, At Least For Now

News RoomNews RoomSeptember 26, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

After a solid week of terrible server issues caused by DDoS attacks, Destiny 2 may finally be getting back to normal in time for weekly reset here. For the time being, it looks like the problem is mostly under control.

I wrote yesterday about how you can literally see the attacks in motion when you take a look at the Destiny 2 playercount on Steamcharts. But now, using that same graph, you can also watch the servers get more stable over the course of the past day. You can see that stability start on 9/25 and continue through today on 9/26. With reset in a few hours, hopefully that can continue.

Anecdotally, players are also saying they were able to play various activities without interruption yesterday, so the smoother line seems like its working in practice, as well as a data point. Bungie Help did tweet last night at 8 PM that they were investigating error code reports, but again, it seems to have lessened from earlier in the week:

Many Destiny 2 players had to put the game down over the course of the past week because it became clear you had no idea whether or not you’d be able to finish anything without getting booted out. We still do not know who may have been behind the DDoS attacks, we don’t know if Bungie knows, and it’s possible just…no one will know, given how these kinds of things usually go.

There are not often repercussions for DDoSers who are notoriously hard to find. I’m sure Bungie would bring their large legal hammer down on them, if they could unmask them, but it remains to be seen if that can happen. And we probably wouldn’t know until things went to court, in any case. Bungie has unmasked plenty of bad actors in the past harming their game, and arguably this DDoS has been one of the worst attacks they’ve seen. But yeah, we’ll see. It won’t be easy to track them down. Bungie has been DDoSed in the past, and far as we know, no one was ever caught for that.

As for the game itself, we don’t know if the attacks have fully subsided for good, but it appears that for now, at least, it’s much safer to hop back in and probably complete whatever activity you’re trying to run, raids and Trials matches (at least for the next few hours) included.

I plan to head back in today in order to play the new story stuff, and we’ll see how things are functioning then. Will update this post if there are any significant problems.
