In a further sign of just how much of a step up Sony’s new A95L Quantum Dot OLED TV is – especially for gamers – from other models in the brand’s 2023 range, it’s been announced today that the A95L range is now compatible with Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PS Remote Play system.
The PS Remote Play app, which is now available on the Android TV platform carried by Sony TVs, enables PS4 and PS5 owners to access remote gameplay regardless of their location. All they need is a compatible device – which now includes, exclusively in Sony’s TV range, the A95Ls – connected to a high-speed internet connection (5Mbps minimum, at least 15Mbps recommended) and they’ll be able to pick up where they left off any of the compatible games they’ve been playing without having to physically have their consoles connected to the TV.
This could be very handy in households which, like my own, have their PS5/PS4 set up in a secondary room attached to a relatively small TV but often want to play on the main living room TV too when that set’s not being used for anything else. Especially as the PS5’s ‘interesting’ shape makes it far from the easiest thing to physically move between rooms.
The A95L’s new PS Remote Play feature also means, of course, that you can play your PS4/PS5 games at a friend’s house if they have an A95L, or that a visiting friend could resume their PS4/PS5 games on your A95L without the need for consoles to physically be moved from home to home.
The A95L is one of the first Android TVs to take advantage of PS Remote Play, and thanks to their flagship nature within Sony’s 2023 TV range the A95L sets (which I preview in depth here) have the potential to deliver the new gaming feature uniquely well. After all, the Quantum Dot OLED technology at the A95Ls’ heart can deliver the purist and most wide-ranging colors in the TV world thanks to its pure RGB color reproduction system not potentially ‘tainted’ by the pure white element that’s used in ‘regular’ WRGB OLED TVs.
QD OLED technology has also proved itself this year to be exceptionally bright by the standards of self-emissive TV technologies, keeping pace with the new MLA technology sported by LG’s new G3 WRGB OLED TV range. This brightness also serves gaming graphics particularly well, as does the A95L’s Cognitive Processor XR and XR Clear Image technology for improving noise reduction and motion clarity.
What’s more, if you’ve got your A95L connected to one of Sony’s compatible soundbars and speaker systems (HT-A9, HT-A7000, HT-A5000 and HT-A3000) your PS Remote Play gaming can also benefit from the TV’s Acoustic Center Sync feature. This sees the powerful speaker system built into the TV becoming the centre speaker in the wider sound system delivered by the soundbar, creating a larger and more accurately detailed surround sound gaming experience. Especially as all of the compatible Sony sound systems offer 360 Spatial Sound Mapping, where phantom speakers are created all around your room for a more immersive sensation.
The A95L carries Sony’s new Game Menu feature, too, which generates a game-specific GUI carrying features such as variable refresh rate support on/off, Motion Blur Reduction (which trades a little screen response time for a smoother gaming experience), a targeting crosshair superimposed over the centre of the game graphics, and a Black Equalizer feature that lets you make dark areas brighter (to spot lurking enemies more easily) without impacting the brightness of the rest of the image.
The PS Remote Play app is available for A95Ls and PS5/PS4 consoles now.
